Longsight hosting Open Source Program for the Ohio Learning Network

OLN Open Source Pilot Program Through December, 2006, forty-two institutional members of the Ohio Learning Network will have access to four major open source applications hosted and supported by The Longsight Group. Dr. Cable Green, director of technolog for the OLN, is leading this effort which makes possible pilot uses of uPortal, Sakai, Open Source Portfolio and Moodle at no cost to participating OLN member schools. Logins for faculty, students and staff from participating institutions are managed through another open source application, Yale's Centralized Authentication Service (CAS) which provides single-signon functionality across all four applications. Both face-to-face and online training sessions are planned throughout the year for local support staff who can encourage their faculties and students to rely on this pilot program to test authentically these open source applications. New features released for these applications are available for testing in a separate "sandbox" environment. Longsight is providing complete hosting and support services for the OLN open source program, including server configuration for redundancy and load balancing, application upgrades, training for local support staff and tier 2 support services. Ohio Learning Network member institutions who wish to participate in the open source program should contact Cable Green for more information. The Longsight Group, founded in 1978, specializes in supporting open source applications for higher education. For more information, please contact information@longsight.com.
